"Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist of the usual 'track six sounds like track four, which sounds like track one, but track two stands out' type. Nice songs though, but not extremely good, and not very original" is what I wrote after listening to David Mead's record 'Mine and Yours' a couple of times. Now, after listening to it for some more, it turns out that 'Mine and Yours' captures some excellent pop songs like 'Venus Again' and 'Mine and Yours'. This is not alternative rock, and it's not commercial pop - this is quality pop. Or should we say alternative pop, since most pop music is crap? Anyway, this album features songs of which most are in line with a British band that called an end to it some five years ago, Deacon Blue. [The record label informs us, as we go to press, that Deacon Blue have indeed reformed. - Ed.] I remain with the view that Mead's material is not very original, but 'Girl on the Roof' is gonna be my Springtime-and-in-love-song of this year. Now I just need spring weather and someone to fall in love with: "Flower in her hair, girl on the roof/I can see her, I believe her, is she asking for proof?/Love is in the air, girl on the roof." [Also, we are pleased to announce that the writer has found that special someone in the meantime. We wish them luck. - Ed.]
