After a number of smaller releases, one of which being the superb April installment in Raster's 20' to copyright series, COH, born in Russia as Ivan Pavlov, has finally put out his first full-length album, "Mask of birth". Unlike a large number of full-lengths by other electronic artists, which tend to be nothing more than a bunch of twelve-inches conveniently put together into one package, "Mask of birth" is actually an album in the true sense of the word:nine fairly brief tracks with a consistent feel and production. Apparently, it is dedicated to Pavlov's newly-born daughter, but look elsewhere if you're expecting "Soothing sounds for baby" part II. In fact, the overall mood is rather dark and menacing: metallic drones battle quirky synthetic percussion and formless low-frequency rumbles in a fashion that is intensly cinematic and pure standalone music at the same time. How is this possible? Well, one could imagine a particularly nasty Science Fiction flick getting dressed up with some snippets from this album for added atmospheric value, but when you partake of the music without considering its possible uses, you'll discover that each track is completely self contained: COH (because he's Russian, that's actually pronounced "Son", in case you were wondering) makes full use of the entire sonic spectrum to maximum effect, steering the listener from tranquility to mayhem and back to relief within a very short amount of time and without the listener ever feeling rushed into a particular mood prematurely. Quite an achievement. Add to this the fact that "Mask of birth" contains no weak sounds, every hiss and buzz being presented forcefully and without hesitation and you have an album that's a powerful contendent for the position of "Album of the year copyright"(well, top ten, at least). Get it.
