Chuck is back. After releasing The Other Side Of Town in 1981 and the surprisingly successful Extremely Cool in 1999, Old Souls & Wolf Tickets is the third full-length record from night owl and blues veteran Chuck E. Weiss.
Again, it is hard not to hear the influence of his soul mate Tom Waits, but most of all Weiss returns to the authentic swap blues of the past on his latest release. The highlights are countless on Old Souls & Wolf Tickets as Weiss explores the smoky and filthy juke joints of New Orleans and listens to the tragic life stories of ancient cotton pickers. Frank Zappa would have said that the blues is not dead, but it smells just a little bit funny.
You can hear that Chuck Weiss slowed down a little and exchanged the bizarre for solid blues classics, but that is no reason for dissatisfaction. He stills growls, puffs, and sings his way through fourteen songs of life with a squeaky voice. This enhanced CD contains a short video and a song with Willie Dixon from 30 years ago, but it all fits in perfectly with the new songs.
