Some impressive musicians playing on this album: Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, both of Sonic Youth fame. The music itself has nothing do with the avantgarde rock from that band, as this is the world wide debut from Christina Rosenvinge, a Spanish singer-songwriter with Danish roots. Not her debut album, as she released more than a couple albums for the latin-orientated market, but this marks her debut on Smells like Records and links her with the American guitarunderground. The small, tiny songs on 'Frozen Pool' are all very enjoyable, with the thin but charming (mostly) English vocals from Christina - with an accent I can't pinpoint somewhere in particular, but it sounds really charming, almost seductive - as focal point. Musically it can be compared with Elliott Smith, but also with Bebel Gilberto and French chansons. Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo realise this is not a Sonic Youth record, so they play only what the quiet, little songs need. As always I do have something to complain about - this time it is the voice of second singer Tim Foljahn (of Two Dollar Guitar), he has a somewhat boring voice and diminishes some of the spontanity and charm of Christina's songs. None of the songs really exceed the overall standard, but that standard is way above average, and none of the songs is below that standard either. They all contain classic melodies which you know you have heard before but never know when. The albums concludes with a beautiful version of Leonard Cohen's "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy", and this song fits perfectly on this timeless sounding record.
