'Overnight' is the third album of Arlington-based Stephen Gardner, who has been collaborating with Ben Bailes since Chessie's second album 'Meet'. Like all other Chessie material, 'Overnight' is dedicated to the world of trains and railway, an obsession for Gardner since his childhood. 'Overnight' is by far the most moody album imaginable, since this album is about travelling by train through the night. And to be honest, our journey starts very promisingly. The first four tracks are abstract but warm landscapes of different layers of melodies, peppered by electric and acoustic instruments and noised with a deeply layered bass line, giving the music a direction. A kind of mixture of Autechre-like electronic and My Bloody Valentine-like pop. But with 'Lineside', Gardner and Bailes introduce beats that give the journey a somewhat strange character. As if they are not able to choose between pure soundscape or more direct techno-driven tracks. The result is something in-between, without really sounding emotional. The same goes for the classical piano influences and prominent acoustic guitar influences near the end of the album. Happily, the very promising opening with a passion for real trance-like soundscapes with introvert guitars and deep basses is also the ending of this train trip. 'Eyes and Smile' also combines different layers of guitars, noises, bass, and a few breaks to end the journey in perfect style. What remains is the unsatisfactory feeling that this could have been a journey of sublime beauty, if only Chessie hadn't introduced conflicting elements in the middle that break the tension on 'Overnight'.
