The long-awaited (for me, anyway) new release from grindkings Cephalic Carnage is finally here! Right when Relapse finally seems to be putting out a ton of great albums again, this one simply tops them all. Origin, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Nile's newest recordings were all exceptional releases, but the power and crushing brutality of Lucid Interval shrouds them all as the best Relapse has to offer this year. As well, definitely the best Cephalic Carnage has brought to the table thus far.
With portions of Dillinger Escape Plan-style math-core; fast, grindy Nasum; groove-grinding Dying Fetus; and unique elements which one can only guess have come from some deep corner of the human brain that Cephalic Carnage somehow managed to unleash through a deal with the devil, Lucid Interval is something that this world has never heard before. During moments on this album, I often wonder if the world is even ready to hear this masterpiece of . . . of . . . indescribable grind!! Because that is what it is.
To even attempt to pigeonhole Cephalic Carnage into any genre would prove futile. For example, take the song 'Anthro Emesis.' This song literally switches gears several times, with quick breaks in-between parts. A lesser band would likely have chopped this song into five different songs just to make the track list longer and thus more "impressive." Song number five, 'Pseudo,' contains sounds, riffs, and arrangements that are unmatched by any band to date. And to spread things farther across the map, there's even a nice little classical guitar/flamenco-style song called 'Cannabism,' for the kiddies.
With Lucid Interval, Cephalic Carnage continues to push the envelope of modern music and prove why they are one of the driving forces in grindcore. Inverting every idea of how music should be played, this album will keep your attention fixated right at the CD player, with your jaw dropped in utter disbelief at what these marijuana-fueled, Colorado grindfreaks have to offer. Easily one of the best albums of the year, Lucid Interval has something for any extreme music fan; not too sloppy, but not too nice. It is frightening to wonder what this five-piece will conjure up for their next release.
