A waste of time.

When Oasis, Blur, and Pulp dominated the charts there were a lot of bands that profited from this Britpop revival. And it resulted in some nice albums and songs from bands like the Supernaturals, Supergrass, Menswear, and Cast. Cast finds thier roots in the La's (from the famous 'Here She Goes' and more terrific music), because singer John Power played bass in that band. In these Britpop high times their album 'All Change' even made it into the British Top Ten. But time flies and music changes, and in the year 2001 most of the people have had it with the decent Britpop songs. And so bands have to do something different. Blur, for example, did an excellent job with the albums 'Blur' and '13', but Cast couldn't find the right thing to do. Which leads to their latest release 'Beetroot'. It starts with 'Desert Draught' and 'Heal Me': songs that lead to nothing, no head and tail, you've forgotten them after they've just finished. And even the flute (that unfortunately keeps interfering in the songs all of the time) can't improve things. Some samples are used to give some songs an identity but they just don't fit, like the reversing tape-sound in 'Curtains' or some unclear sound effects in 'Lose Myself'. But is it all that bad? No, not everything, because 'Giving It All Away' and the Beatlesque 'I Never Can Say' are quite alright, above average. But then it stops. Every song has got its little thingy, an attempt to do something original. But that's not really a smart thing to do for a band that's completely out of shape. They can be glad that they've done some nice things in the past, because if 'Beetroot' had been their debut, only family and relatives of the band members would have bought the album out of pity. It is really a shame that Cast haven't had the decency to throw the whole album away and start all over. This is really a waste of time.
