Carrera | Straightening The Curves

Carrera make the sort of indie-punk-pop-rock that brought the likes of Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Millencolin fortune and fame, but also has thousands of bands struggling to make a name for themselves in this overcrowded market segment. Straightening The Curves is self-released, putting Carrera, for now, in the latter group. But the small difference between success and failure in the genre and the quality of Carrera's material leave the band enough hope for a place with the former, at least at a Dutch national level. The competition there is pretty dismal: the big thing right now is Di-Rect, a bands whose selling points are that their drummer is "sooooooo cute" (that puberty estrogen surge has always been the chicken with the golden eggs for the record industry), and that they have managed to completely castrate The Who's My Generation.

There are no covers on Straightening The Curves. I repeat: no covers. Not even of a catchy '80s synthesizer hit. Probably because of the blissful absence of a cynical old producer hired by the label to get the band in the charts. And the production hasn't even suffered from it. Carrera's catchy, but unremarkable songs sound exactly like the catchy, but unremarkable songs by the major label acts that the charts are filled with. And since the artwork looks professional too, all that seems to stand between Carrera and success is signing on the dotted line, re-releasing the album with an added cover of a catchy '80s tune (I suggest something by either The Cure or Talk Talk) on a major, and making a funny video for that cover (maybe Love Cats would be an idea?). By that time I will probably be completely sick of Carrera, but until then, Straightening The Curves makes nice background music for, let's say, doing the dishes. So that's what I'm going to do now.
