With Cam dishing out the goods, notable French label Chronowax unveils the first installment of their new Honeymoon compilation series. Cam, aka Laurent Daumail (he recently dropped the "DJ") contributes a relaxed, mellow, and thoroughly laid-back hip hop trip which covers everything from burning love songs to cinematic splendor. Far more intimate than the usual lounge-music fare, Honeymoon offers a strong collection of individual tunes. He selects the downbeat tracks with flair, such as "Loran's Dance," a smooth, ultra-schmoozy groove from Grover Washington Jr. Coldcut's lovely "Autumn Leaves" makes an appearance, bringing a sense of sentimental nostalgia and yearning to the proceedings while showcasing a rich, throaty voice over delicate piano, rumbling bass, and shimmering touches of strings. DJ Matsuoka's "Piano Objective 3" is another great track, balancing cartoonish sound effects with fluttery piano riffs and bongos. Mr. Scruff adds a classic Ninja Tune touch with "So Long," and the Pucho Latin Brother remix of "Han-Tome," by Japanese hip hop talent Muro punches things up with a strong flute solo and heavy beats. Cam's selection of hip hop tunes thankfully leans more towards conscious rhymes and blunted beats than bling-bling, P.Diddy-esque parody. Que-D and Phat Kat (with "Cash Flow" and "Microphone Master," respectively) lend their distinctive voices to the mix, aided by bouncy production work courtesy of the current king of hip-hop, Jay Dee. "Old & Wise," by Yah Supreme, is another strong track of thick, pure production which perfectly suits his assertive delivery. Despite the strong showing of such tracks, the best song on the album, Henry Mancini's "Lujon," completely blows them out of the water. Taken from the score of the movie "Mr. Lucky," "Lujon" is a beautiful, intensely emotional composition of full-bodied strings and tender instrumental solos. At once somber, majestic, and uplifting, "Lujon" is simply magical and worthy of many repeat listenings. Overall, a solid compilation disc for fans of the hazy area between downbeat and hip hop. Though not entirely cohesive and somewhat lacking in structure, Honeymoon is an interesting foray into the moodier side of Cam's musical taste.
