It would seem that the Layo&Bushwacka! success formula has also re-enhanced the impact of Matthew B.'s own imprint. After some previous hesitant releases which left the label in the neither-fish-nor- flesh-category, Mister B. eventually seems to settle for the sound that made him one of the pioneers of tech-house: sample-ridden, dark-as-hell housemusic that will not decide whether to be fucked-up electrofunk, malignant breakbeat or just his strange copyright version of Detroit Techno. "Monster" itself is a dirty electrogroove with undertones of UR's definitive -and mostly unattainable- version of Detroit electro that, as it progresses, breaks down into a speeded-up funky hiphoptrack. The flip "Herbal", as you might guess from its title, ventures into more downbeat territories, but should be urging you and me to the same conclusion: Mista Bushwacka is one of the future greats, especially if you consider that, now as we speak, an entire album of his project Cellar Dwellas -on the same label- has just been released to the hungry crowds, containing eight more straight gems like these. Somewhere on "Monster" a voice shouts: "You may learn something". Indeed you might.
