Emocore is gaining some serious territory in today's musical landscape. As long as the quality stays as high as displayed on this beautifully packaged double 3" MCD, I'm not complaining. On this split release, Swiss emocore outfit Brazen and Swedish emo-rockers Kevlar team up and present their newest songs to us. Brazen are a Geneva-based band, and their two songs show both their melodic and angry side. 'Everlasting Gestures' is a harmonious and almost instrumental "Slint go emo" track, with some melodic vocals in the middle, while 'Statues and Waifs' stays in more standard emocore waters, with over-the-top screaming vocals in fast waves of harsh guitar chords and nervous drumming. Both great songs. Kevlar from Sweden are the newest signing to Sticksister, and we may expect a new full-length in early 2002. If these two new songs are representative of all of their new material, the album could be a really pleasant suprise. 'Capitol City Child' is a great rock song which takes influences from Sonic Youth and Fugazi straight into modern rock. The second song '1888' is a beautiful instrumental song, melodic with a postrock-like feel to it, but without the often repetitive approach from that genre. Recommended.
