To be honest, I hadn't heard of the name Botch before hearing this record. "Can't wait to hear more hardcore coming from these guys," I was thinking, after I had heard this EP a few times. But then I read their bio and found out there was one problem: After nine years, Botch has called it quits. There will never be any new music from Botch.
Botch were from Seattle and released two records. An Anthology Of Dead Ends is a six-track EP, with song titles that are all wrongly spelled names of countries that have been at war with America. First song 'Spaim' is just an intro to what is coming. You hear some weird guitar noise, but with the following song, 'Japam,' it really starts.
Like most of the songs presented here, 'Japam' has a lot of tempo changes. It makes the songs exciting and unpredictable. The guitar parts vary from whining to just plain riffs, and you never know what is coming next. The songs 'Framce' and 'Vietmam' have the same features as 'Spaim,' but after those two, it really starts to get interesting with the song 'Afghamistan,' which is a very impressive song. It starts really quietly, with some guitar and singer Dave Verellen almost whispering his lines, not grunting like he does in the other songs. Then the drums come in, with a mid-tempo beat, and you can feel the tension starting to surround you. An organ comes in, and, after a short stop, a piano and a violin give you some breath. But this breath is taken away from you, when the song ends with some disturbing spoken words. 'Micaragua,' then, has a drum intro of more than a minute, after which the music explodes again. Shortly after, it's all over.
No more new music from Botch in the future. That's a pity. Happily, you and I still have a chance to get to know them and their music better.
