Beautiful chord changes, a beautiful voice, and some very good songs. Blake Hazard's Little Airplane contains dreamy, acoustic pop songs lifted by Strawberry Fields-like Moogs and sampled drums. This should’ve been the only thing to say about Ms. Hazard, but she made it impossible to just pass by the fact that there are 13 songs on Little Airplane that start to sound the same when you get to the second half of the record. It’s sad to have to mention it, because after the first three songs, you think you’ve got something special in your hands. The great production work by wunderkind Jack Drag couldn’t save it all, although the smoky jazz production in some of the songs is really nice. You want to fall in love, but find out that’s she’s not that extraordinary after all. The album needed more upbeat songs like Bedtime to make it sound a bit more varied. It sounds like a missed opportunity. Maybe late at night, just before tucking in, this could turn romantic on us.
