'Blackened Sky' is the debut album by young Scottish three-piece Biffy Clyro. There aren't many Scottish rock influences on this album, though, as the members of Biffy Clyro are obviously influenced a lot by American underground rock. The somewhat complex structures of the songs give away their love for Fugazi and even Helmet, but they also show influences by more melodic groups like Nirvana. With all three members accounting for lead and backing vocals, it sometimes sounds as if you're listening to Greg Graffin and Mr. Brett of Bad Religion. As with Bad Religion, Biffy Clyro vary between melodic songs and more experimental song structures. And it's with these more complex compositions that they tend to overplay themselves and lose the attention that they have just gotten. Songs like 'Kill The Old, Torture The Young' and 'Convex, Concave' lack the power of 'Justboy' and '57', which combine loud guitars and big choruses. With the same hooks as the Foo Fighters, this young band could really become something big. And that's what it is supposed to do, judging by the big production. 'Blackened Sky' is a bit over-produced and misses rawness, but then again it's obvious that this band is meant to reach a larger public. Biffy Clyro can easily compete with the more one-dimensional nu-metal bands that mean big money nowadays. The songs on this album are more thought-out, more exciting, and also catchier. 'Blackened Sky' is a serious alternative for those who want more then just loud music and a tough attitude. If the singles don't get them in the charts, then the summer festivals will bring them to the attention of the public. This band will probably be seen on the big stages late in the afternoon, and afterwards kids will leave, having discovered that loud music is more than just yelling and posing: It's about having songs.
