A new split cd from the Belgium label Funtime has left the building. Between The Lines and Against The Grain created a 12 song record. Between The Lines breaks the ice with 'Grey And Cold'. Some things can be grey and cold indeed but not this track. I like the way they did the intro of approximately one minute on the first track. After that BTL opens the over-pressured bucket of vocals. Screaming lord!! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Unfortunately I expected the second song 'All Your Dreams' to be something like the first one. It turned out a little bit disappointing, but after listening to it for a few times I started getting to like it, except for the slow break. It doesn't belong in there. But all is forgiven because of the next three songs: 'The End', 'Jealousy' and 'Down And Out'. Too bad there are only 5 songs on the split. I'm desperate for more.
Next on the split is Against The Grain. A totally different story for these NY'ers. It's a band and just a band that plays their own shit and not what you wanna hear. These are the words of ATG and when I started listening to the 7 songs they recorded I immediately knew what they were talking about. No wonder they call themselves Against The Grain. When I look at their titles and lyrics I would say these guys are the Mucky Pup of hardcore. Don't be offended, I mean the band Mucky Pup. Song titles like 'A.K.A Hater' and 'Haile Berry Hit n Run' speak for themselves. Those song titles may suck but that's not what we are listening to. ATG has some music talent, and some parts reminded me of the very, very, very old days of Madball, Slapshot and even Hanson Brothers' 'Ratpack'. And we can say that's hell of a long time ago. If you could mix these three you will get ATG. Just try it for yourself.
I never took the chance to get some albums by these bands. Times have changed.....time to get some.
