'Coincidentia Oppositorum' is the third album of Beefcake - Gabor Schablitzki and Volker Kahl - on German imprint Hymen. This is avantgarde electronica that is compared to the likes of Autechre and Aphex Twin. The tracks have no names, the leaflet only contains a Victor Hugo phrase... You get the picture: This is "difficult music". The beats are complex and out of control. The soft waves remind me of masterpieces by Mike Paradinas or Richard D. James. But for me Beefcake doesn't have "it". The samples they use, from film noir to strings and whispering voices, make their music incredibily melodramatic. Even bombastic. The songs are so experimental that they never seem to go anywhere. I must hand it to Beefcake: They make music I've never heard before. But I'm pretty sure I don't want to hear this ever again.
