Reviewing can be hard. Sometimes there's an album, and you just don't know
what to say about it. Take Living Targets, the third album of Berlin quintet
Beatsteaks. Though it was released by Epitaph it is not a punk album.
Beatsteaks make ecclectic alternative rock, radio-friendly, but with a sharp
edge. A bit like Soulwax, only somewhat less adventurous. Living Targets is
not an album that won't leave your stereo for days, but you'll certainly
play it once in a while. I mean, a track like Above Us has "hit" written
all over it. And A-Way ain't too shabby either. Actually, all tracks are
pretty good. Summer might sound a little too much like Helmet, but there's
worst bands to rip off and in the rest of the material there is no Helmet
influence to be found.
That's the problem with Living Targets. It's an unpredictable album filled
with conventional rock, be it with a sharp edge. Sounds vague? I told you it
was hard to describe. Let's put it this way: "Beatsteaks - Living Targets:
good rock album." That'll have to do.
