Barry 7 -of Add N To X fame- presents his second adventure into the archeological task of unveiling early electronica and rare beat. This time he goes raiding the crates of the Italian Cam label, renowned for its jazz records and soundtracks. Most of the tracks are commercially available for the first time and it was about time they where. Seventeen tracks in all, the scope these artists take in is enormous, as are their tongue-teasingly beautiful names. Guiseppe De Luca does great things on the devilish 'Rito A Los Angeles' (with a guitar-riff courtesy of Iron Butterfly), on the cinematic 'Dorian Gray' and on 'October Fest', that comes on like a collaboration of Fellini's house composer Nino Rota with Laibach. Ennio Morricone is amazing on the triumphant 'Dies Irae Psichedelico', a masterly 2-minute symphonic fantasy with mixed chorus, all in the style of his Western soundtracks. Intermittently a big hit @ volgaTowers. But the ambient structures of 'In Un Ricordo' or the ritual Spaghetti-western guitars of 'Secondo Rito' are just as exciting. 'Iniziazone 72' sees Morricone go all '70s psychedelic space rock with the weirdest sounds flowing by in its orbit. Giampiero Boneschi is the most electronic of the bunch. His 'Sisy' is revolutionary proto-electro jazz. 'Oacum' comes on like Duane Eddy with Suicide as backing band. The futuristic 'New Situation' pre-dates Cabaret Voltaire, Tuxedomoon and even Black Dog. Another far out from da volgaJury! 'Saturne' is menacing and spacey like Basic Channel. 'PP: i. Collage' takes off as the same Basic Channel, but evolves into an alternative soundtrack for Eraserhead and then morphs into groovy space jazz. Daniele Patucchi's 'Motivi Psichedelici' has harps, flutes and percussion lined up for an Angelo Branduardi-style stoned medieval trip. S. Torrosi's 'Omicidio Per Vocazione' is funky jazz-fusion rock with mad vibes and a nifty piano melody. If you consider that all this fabulous music is from the '70s (and even '60s), then we can only utter: Vangelis, go home!
