Derrick May is being generous these days: the second Transmat in a year or so is a fact and it's a beauty. And even more importantly it's from the elegant hand of Finnish prodigy Aril Brikha, who, after his achingly essential Art of Vengeance ep (on sister-label Fragile), throws another soultechno splinterbomb in your face. Two extraordinarily polished diamants supported by a crystalclear production, flown in from the ice cold plains of Northern Europe but sounding incredibly Motor City, eager as they are to make the best of the always precariously difficult blending of soul and minimalism. 'On and on' is -like his classic 'Groove la Chord'- a straight-on minimal Basic Channel style track with echoes from the better works of EBE and the Austrian Grow!-label that deepens rather then climaxes and is a template for what soulful techno in the year copyright should be. The other track 'Headhunter' is a relentless technogroove in the style of Aubrey or the Offshoot label, experimenting with imposing breakbeat and electro rhythms while painting with synthwaves that send shivers down your spine. And yes: the sleeve is what they call 'artwork'. And, on top of this, also the best-pressed record I've heard coming from The D in ages, the music almost bursting out of the grooves. Only one thing left to say : Time! Space! Transmat!
