HEAVYYYYYYYYY METAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL! As a sort of a backlash against
nu-metal, the old-school variety - with guitar solos and singers that can
actually sing - is making a comeback. And not only are new bands entering the
scene, but some of the oldies suddenly have found new inspiration too, as proven
by Slayer with last year's blistering 'God Hates Us All.' Does the same go
for sub-top veterans Annihilator?
Not really. Technically there is nothing wrong with 'Waking The Fury,' which
contains some fine riffs and solos, but it seems like Jeff Waters, who IS
Annihilator, is just making records because that's what he does. It's not
only that a lot of the music and lyrics are cliché-ridden - singer and former
Overkill member Joe Comeau sings lines like "Die, die, die, I'll paint the
sky a bloody red / Kill, kill, kill, I now command you at my feet" without
ever putting his tongue in his cheek - but there's also a lack of urgency to
the material on 'Waking The Fury.' There are some attempts at modernising
the
sound with Fear Factory influences, but again, it feels like that has been
done only because that is the thing one is supposed to do. This is heavy
metal as a 9-to-5 job.
