Every European country seems to have its own hot nu-metal act these days. Italy has Linea 77, Spain has Hamlet and France brought us Pleymo. The Netherlands also have some successful nu-metal acts; Dreadlock Pussy, Celldust and Dimension Seven, just to name a few. Every band is doing his own thing, and it's the question if these bands have that much in common with each other. Agresion is another Dutch nu-metal band. This band consists of four people from Venezuela who are now living in Amsterdam (sounds known; isn't that the same situation as with Laberinto?). After listening to their debut-album I had to conclude I can't compare them to any of the aforementioned bands, although you can still call 'em nu-metal. So don't expect to hear a Dreadlock Pussy or the new Laberinto. Expect a band that knows how to write solid and modern metalsongs. Besides the average production, there's only one point of criticism. Sometimes I get the feeling that they not exactly succeeded in writing that cool chorus, although they come very, very close (e.g. in 'That Day'). Unfortunately, it just misses the impact it should have. And that counts for most songs on the album. But please don't get me wrong; 'Sur' is a solid album, with a lot of nice stuff, too. The video of 'Too Many Years' (one of the best songs of the album) can be seen on TMF. And their version of Technotronic's 'Pump up the jam' is rather funny. So after all, the album spinned in my cd player for a long time and it's worth a listen. And a buy, as you can order it at the site of 4tune Records for only 15 guilders (about $6; that's nothing! I repeat: NOTHING). So check it out and see for yourself. And if you get the chance; check 'em out live, as these guys know how to play.
