Kurt Dahlke and Frank Fenstermacher present their third release, called 'Nothing' on the ATATAK label. To be honest, it's far more than nothing, though it is definitely not everything either. Then what is it ? Both gentlemen (they sound like "gentle men") bring a mixture of styles, a fine blend of dub, trip-hop, ambient, funk and so much more. I heard tunes leaning towards dopey dub, over French lounging to 60ties movies themes and soft-porn-music. You can hear Dead can Dance on electro in track 2, Madonna after-party music in track 3, Basic Channel in trip-hop on track 4, Lee Perry versus the Mad Professor in track 5, Barry White and Miles Davis performing together in track 7 and Ennio Morricone in track 9 that could have had as a title : "A fistfull of Frank's". It must be said that this musical masterpiece has one specific sound, a specific feeling. It is relaxing, yet danceable, it is weird yet so conventional, it is un-dogmatic yet very firm. It is relaxed, beautiful and soothing but at the same time it holds a lot of mystery, motion and it has this little sharp edge that is well hidden. So, to conclude, this CD is at least worthwhile listening to. Some will like it, some won't. But I have definitely enjoyed it from beginning 'till end. Personally, I sometimes had the feeling that this could be William Orbit and Madonna who finally dared exploring more then just the conventional borders of electronic music. As if they had become fans of labels such as Cheap, Rephlex and Warp.
