Did you ever realise that, as soon as you take algebra out of mathematics, it doesn't work anymore? Did you think jazz-dance minus jazz equals dance? And that jazz-dance minus dance equals jazz? Well, you're wrong. They both equal 33.3. You don't need some science PhD to see that. Did somebody say "vinyl"? I was just going to say, "CD by American five-piece band". Contrary to the name, this band has little to do with antics. Or you would have to consider a cello and a trombone antics. 33.3 play slow music that is very suitable for a late summer evening or a not-too-noisy dinner with red wine. But this Yo La Tengo without lyrics on jazzy arrangements is good to dance to or drink tea to as well. And this brings me to their 1999 debut 'Tea at the Palace of Hoon', which was received quite well and mounted the charts for some time. One of the 'Tea' songs was used in the Giorgio Armani 'Mania' ad, but don't be fooled by that: All 33.3 musicians wear white. I will fail to give you an answer on the differences between both records and the possible progression 33.3 have made, since I simply don't know their debut. 'Plays Music' is a soothing record though, but not extremely enchanting or very "new". This is not to say that this is a poor record. On the contrary, 'Plays Music' is the ideal record on the quiet side of your 24-hour day. Just one more thing: nice cover. 33.3's cellist Dominique Davison, who works in an architectural firm, probably selected it. And she's not the only smart one: This is a group of mainly (ex-)Yale University students. So this is what people mean by "intelligent music"!
