Overwhelming. The first performance of Coil in The Netherlands brought one real eye-opener: the opening by 2nd Gen. 45 minutes of noise, breaks, feedback, hectic rhythms, cool images presented on a big screen. 2nd Gen's debut album 'Irony is' already came out at the end of last year but remained remarkably unknown. A shame. 'Irony Is' sounds like Kevin Martin (Techno Animal), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and Technical Itch making an uncompromising album. Raw, hectic, filthy, disorientating, loud, heavily distorted. Listen for instance to 'Black Spring' that sounds like 30ties blues on industrial acid, 'Musicians Are Morons' that could have been a psychedelic song by Loop (still remember them?) but then completely distorted or the hectic distorted breakbeat of 'Schism' that let's even Bad Company do it in their pants. But there is more. 2nd Gen is also dark experimental ambient reminding of acts like Muslimgauze or superb melodic industrial with more feedback and distortion then you can imagine. This album is alienating and sublime at the same time. 'Irony Is' is art.
