After sixteen(!) years in the freezer legendary funky industrialists 23 Skidoo return to the frontstage with an ep that senses the pulse of time in a way nearly ungraspable for a group that's stayed in the background for such a long period of time. A foreplay for their self-titled longplayer, to follow later on this year -and which will feature the diverse talents of Roots Manuva and the Aswad horn-section-, this 3-tracker has turned out to be a hotch-potch of past and present styles. From their past they've withheld the sinister atmospheres and cinematic approach but the rude funkfeel has been kept alive, probably due to their recent production and remix efforts for hiphop legends like Public Enemy and Ice T. Titletrack 'The Dawning' stays closest to these influences with jazzman Pharaoh Saunders dropping a melancholic saxsolo over a nocturnal hiphop track. The other two cuts are in the same vein but there the ominous ambiences are pushed more to the front of the mix. Both 'Coded heat' -great title!- and 'Ayu' prove that their pioneering 80ies mixture of ethnic sounds and electronic experiments still bears its fruits after all these years. So many artists and genres spring to mind when you listen to this that I can hardly wait for the full album. Time just seems to have no effect on real talent, I suppose. Anyway, pleased to meet them again.
