In pouring rain, quite a large audience found its way to the Ekko venue to see Canadian-Scots the Real McKenzies play. Their blend of punk rock and traditional folk melodies immediately catapulted the bodies at the front into a slam dance. Thus waking everybody from the solid state of slumber the Norwegian opening act Amulet had left us in, with their awful attempt to cram 1,000 styles of loud music, from way back when, into one song. The Real McKenzies looked drunk enough to play, encouraged the crowds to drink more, and poured themselves a can of beer per song: The delirium was kinda tremens, I figured. Looking like the Young Ones, all dressed in kilts and sporting a workman attitude, some good fun dominated the superbly sound-mixed show. Band members "mooning" and "shining," thus displaying their true Scotsmanhood, went hand-in-hand with classics like Loch Lomond, treated in real McKenzie style. It would seriously be failing to give due credit by bringing the band from Boston with the DM initials into comparison. The Real McKenzies fits the genre of folk-punk like a hand fits a glove, and may or may not have found their niche. Truth is, though, that the Real McKenzies are an honest, down-to-earth bunch of rascals with a lot of power and energy. In just over 50 minutes of showtime, the Scottish moon from Canada had one of its brightest moments.
