It was bittersweet to watch The Fire Show perform this evening. The sweet coming from the fact that this band flooded the room with amazing art/noise rock; the bitter came when you realized this was the band’s farewell tour and will be disbanding upon its finish.
The Fire Show only played about five songs from its debut record and latest Saint The Fire Show (Perishable Records), strangely the band did not play from its critically acclaimed Above the Volcano of Flowers (Perishable Records) record.
The performance was cut short due to an elongated set up time. This was mostly due to the fact that only original members Olias Nil and M. Resplendent remain in the band. Resplendent explained to the crowd that the other two members quit prior to the tour. Instead of brining on replacements the duo did it themselves. For each number the group laid down the rhythm by playing drums and bass into looping pedals; once the rhythm loop was down the two went to their guitars. This is where the band shines. The Fire Show have one of the most recognizably original sounds in music today. Imagine steeply angular guitar like Shellac paired up with live wire, ear splitting, oddball noise like Six Finger Satellite welded together after going to art school and you’ll get a small feel for the Show.
Resplendent’s high-end, nasal lyrics cut through the electric squalor to complete this package. The two put on an impressively intense and fiery (no pun intended) performance. It is a shame when musicians this original and artistically challenging decide to part ways, it is truly a loss for the good guys. The Fire Show is still performing a slew of shows before calling it quits, catch ‘em while you can.
