Tonight's opening act is Hundred Reasons. With their first song these guys
from England explode onto the stage, and singer Colin bounces and jumps around as
if his life depends on it. This guy's energy is really something else,
considering the band gets about zero response from the crowd.
Colin looks as
if he came to us straight from the seventies, with his sort-of-Afro hairdo and
huge sideburns, but the music Hundred Reasons make has nothing to do with
that era. It's rock 'n' roll, that's for sure, but these days it's called
emo-core. With emo, it seems it's not that important whether the
singer can actually sing. In this case, the music is good, and the
band is having so much fun onstage that we can overlook the poor vocal quality.
As the band kicks in, playing 'If I Could', their current single, a small part of
the audience actually reacts and starts to move. This encourages the bassist
to start some jumping action too, and to really get into the song. But, as
singer Colin literally points out, it's a "tough crowd" at the Melkweg
tonight, and the band is probably glad to leave the stage after about 35
minutes.
When the main act, Rival Schools, starts their part of the show, suddenly the
reason for the crowd's apathy during Hundred Reasons' gig becomes clear. If
Rival Schools is the main reason for the crowd being here, then of course
they wouldn't appreciate the energetic and powerful music Hundred Reasons
produce: It's so hugely different from the music the main act makes. Rival Schools is dull. Boring, even. I'll go
one step further and say I've
never seen a band try to so hard to induce a state of
drowsiness or sleepiness in the audience and succeed! Well, at least in the case of this
reporter.
After enduring five songs and having more than enough of
the music droning on, I decide it's time to leave. While retrieving my coat
from the cloakroom I hear one of the employees telling the other that this
band sucks. And he's right.
