Boogie rockers Raging Slab had their previous attempt at a European tour ruined by Muslim fundamentalists. And although there are still plenty of asshole lunatics around willing to blow themselves and several hundred other people up, this time around they didn't choose transatlantic air traffic as their target. So Raging Slab had new material to play from both The Dealer and (Pronounced Eat-Shit) albums in "de Kleine Zaal" (the small room) of the Paradiso.
The audience, of whom a majority looked like they owned a vintage Harley, was treated to a performance showing all the signs of a band that has toured several times 'round the world. The songs were played with an almost nonchalant ease, and frontman Greg Strzempka excelled in nonsensical, between-song banter, with running gags that included both a Danish flag and guitarist Elyse Steinman's nipples. Strzempka is one hell of a guitar player who has his own style (he doesn't use a pick), but on vocals he was a bit out of shape. But still, compared with Steinman, who — erect nipples or not — sounds like she drinks a bottle of whiskey and smokes four packs of cigarettes a day, Strzempka was quite the Sinatra. In true Spinal Tap hard rock fashion, Raging Slab wears out about three drummers per album, but the current guy does an Animal (of the Muppets) imitation that puts Dave Grohl to shame.
The gig was a bit on the short side and somewhat played on routine, but still, near the end, all Harley owners were screaming along with every "Hell, yeah!" by Strzempka. And there were a lot of them. Hell yeah!
