After being warmed up by a DJ, brought along on tour by Moloko themselves, bassist Mark and singer Roisin Murphy came on stage, accompanied by a drummer, guitarist and hideously dressed keyboard player.
The first two songs, especially 'Absent minded friends', sounded just a little bit too perfect, as Roisin's voice was exactly as on record, and were therefore a little bit disappointing. Luckily the rest of the night made up for it, as Roisin's stage-presence is so overwhelming and breathtakingly cool (only she can look good in a horrendous eighties glitter-top with a big pink belt, tight, shabby-looking jeans with a heart stitched on a pocket and pink pumps) and is about three-quarters of the fun of seeing Moloko live.
The setlist was a mixture of songs from all three albums, although most songs were from their latest record 'Things to make and do'. One of the many highlights was a track from that album, a duet between the guitarist and Roisin, 'Somebody somewhere', which was brought to us in a very Grease-kind of way. The audience were exceptionally inactive, although I personally cannot understand how anyone can stand still when hearing 'Mother' or 'Fun for me'.
Only their two recent hits, 'The time is now' and 'Sing it back' (which had about five intros and lasted at least fifteen minutes!) got the crowd moving about a little bit. And that crowd was quite interesting, because it was such a big mixture of people- from young girls in glitterdresses to people who could be my parents (no offence!). After about one and a half hour, Moloko finished their set, leaving everybody to keep on (or start) dancing to tunes provided by Nighttown's DJ.
Missed it? Missed out!
