June Of '44: Serene vs. Gut-Punching Loud

June of '44 have just released a new ep called 'In the Fishtank' (it's #6 in a project set up by Dutch distributors Konkurrent) and to celebrate this fact they played a show in Amsterdam.
This band doesn't play very often in Amsterdam, because the Dutch people are not really aware of the music by June of '44. They're actually freakin' great! June of '44 is the dream of the full fledged indiegeek since every bandmember plays or has played in a lot of other obscure, but really influential and good!) bands like Codeine, Rex or the Shipping News.
They're one of those bands in which the musicians are really really good on their instruments in their own way. I mean, Doug Sharin, the drummer is no Cozy Powell by all means, but during the entire concert I was watching his awe-inspring sense of rhythm, he made a great team together with Fred Erskine, the bassplayer (who was also the trumpet player).
Guitarists Sean Meadows and Jeff Mueller played their instruments in very unusual way, a little like Slint used to do. So you've got all those unusual people together and what kind of music do they make? Well, it's not grunge obviously, it's mostly instrumental, very rhythmic and containing a lot of unexpected twists and turns.
Beautiful music? Sometimes serene, creating a very intimate atmosphere and sometimes gut-punching loud with Jeff Mueller screaming on top of the noise. I've said it before and I will say it again: America still has a lot of good music to offer, people!!! June of '44 proved American experimental guitarrock is simply the best and Europe still has to discover this.
Their new CD which everybody attending this show got for free (that's what I call a good deal), is pretty nice too. But I was a little disappointed by it, on CD their music doesn't sound as intense as it did on stage. Still worthwhile though, but if you have a chance to see them live, take it!
They're doing some shows in Germany at the moment and next month they're playing Belgium (Leuven and Kontich).
