Hooverphonic played to an almost sold-out Oude Zaal of the Melkweg on their only gig in the Netherlands of their 'LSD Golf Club World Tour'. And they didn't start too well.
Hooverphonic always is on the edge of sounding too slick, and the start of the concert showed that when the inspiritation is not there it easily goes over that edge. Geike Arnaert's singing was not technically bad, but lacked feeling, guitarist Raymond Geerts turned out to be a first-class shoegazer, but the worst thing was the hired-hand keyboard player, whose playing could best be described with the dreaded f-word (fusion, that is). Only mastermind Alex Callier seemed willing to make something of the show, but his enthusiasm felt out of place (Imagine Jon Spencer on stage with Sigur Ros, and you'll get the idea). The professional lightshow only heightened the TV show performance atmosphere.
Just when it seemed it would be a rather uneventful evening Arnaert exchanged her yellow-black bumblebee skirt for a black leather one that seemed to release her inner femme fatale, otherwise I cannot explain why she suddenly suggestively moaned her way through a surprise cover of AC/DC's 'Hell's Bells'. The rest of the show she kept this up, and just that touch of darkness made for a dramatic change. The lightshow suddenly worked also, instead of appearing too stadium rock, and the keyboard player remembered that besides the complete works of Joe Zawinul he sometimes listens to the Doors' 'Riders on the Storm' as well. Still I'd suggest to get rid of him, if only because of his Robby Valentine haircut and completely out of place 80s metal band posing.
