3 Bands signed to the Dutch label My First Sonny Weismuller presented themselves in Haarlem.
Good honest guitarpop; Ford's Imaginary Inferno sounded incredibly sixties, Moxie was a little new wave-y and Club Diana's biggest influence must be Guided by Voices. These bands got some pretty good reviews in some Dutch magazines, but the Patronaat was awfully empty. It was a shame to see that only about 25 people were in the club. I wondered how many of those had actually paid to get in (like I did). But the music wasn't bad at all.
Club Diana proved the most full-grown, they had a distinct own sound, especially the singer's voice sounded really unique. Compare them to Guided by Voices or Scram C Baby. They just had some slight problems every now and then deciding which song they were going to play and remembering how it started.
Moxie came from the French language part of Belgium and proved to be the most boring. Most of their songs were mid-temp and they had some eighties influences in them. Yawn.
But the first act Ford's Imaginary Inferno was very happy. The singer Hans F. Ford was a little clumsy addressing the small crowd, but as soon as he started playing his sixties popsongs with his band it all sounded very professional. Dutch magazine Opscene called him the best songwriter around these days. Mmmm, I don't know about that, but all of these bands were worth a lot more support than they got this night.
