It was good to see the Deconstruction Tour back in Tilburg's 013 again — way better then the Heineken Music Hall (DT 2001) anyway. Once again, eleven punk bands came by in an afternoon and an evening.
Flogging Molly from Ireland started the day with their catchy folk punk in the vein of Dropkick Murphys. The band got a good response and an excellent sound that turned out to be the best of the day. A positive surprise. Turbo ACs made no impression at all, while Movielife did better, despite the sad looks of their choreographed jumping on stage. Swedish semi-commies Randy punk-rocked in a more relaxed way. The show wasn't bad, but I think this band could use some balls.
Meanwhile the crowd, sixteen years old on average, didn't seem to care who was on stage or what the sound engineer was doing to them. There was a full-time pit going on, probably because kids are easily satisfied at that age. One of the highlights, as far as responses go, were Lost Prophets, a band that gave away a very convincing set of new metal in the vein of Incubus' older work.
Traditionally, there's one hardcore band in the Deconstruction lineup and this year H2O had the honor. The first part of their set was plagued by really bad sound. All you could hear were vocals, bass guitar, and some snare drum, so the band's enthusiasm didn't come across at all. Things became better halfway through the set — far too late if you ask me. A shame, because H2O usually pulls off an intense show.
Tired from the action that had been going on during H2O, it took Midtown a lot of trouble to get people moving again. The same went for ALL, though these veterans showed a great deal of the other bands today how it's done. Mad Caddies' and Mighty Mighty Bosstones' ska punk turned the place upside down again. These party bands showed everybody a good time. MC has progressed a lot since their appearance on the Deconstruction Tour 2000. And MMB? They've been around forever. They do know how to party. Unfortunately singer Dicky Barrett was barely audible.
Headliners Lagwagon could count on a big amount of support. Due to other obligations, I missed out on them. Too bad. Could have been a nice ending to a day without any real highlights.
