This is the second time Disturbed is in The Netherlands for a gig. Fortunately for them, the guys have a bigger audience, this time, than a few years ago at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. Other things have changed since Disturbed's last show in this country, too. For one thing, the band has a new album out, with a slight change in sound. For another, all the theatrics formally associated with Disturbed gigs are gone. So there is no grand entrance, this time, involving an electric chair and simulated frying of singer David Draiman. Instead, the band members walk onto the stage and start right into the music.
Songs from the new album, Believe, are followed by songs from the first album, The Sickness. Disturbed have chosen to make this new album sound more like a lot of other (nu-) metal albums around, rather than trying to maintain the rather specific "Disturbed sound" from The Sickness. Draiman tries more melodious singing on this second album, and, unfortunately, the band loses most of its uniqueness. Most fans want to hear the band hammering out their metal tunes and most fans enjoyed the weird sounds Draiman used to make on the first album. Sometimes sounding like a monkey straight from the jungle, and at other times uttering guttural growls more dog-like than human, Draiman had a way with his vocals that made you sit up and notice this band. Not a whole lot of that on the new album, though. Disturbed is still a metal band and still not a very bad one at that, but the uniqueness is slowly disappearing, and that's a shame.
During the gig, we're treated to some of the favorites from The Sickness, such as 'Stupify,' and 'Down With the Sickness,' and — let's not forget — the brilliant Tears For Fears cover 'Shout 2000.' But it's clear the accent is on the new album. It makes you wonder if Disturbed will manage to maintain the growth of their audience if and when they come back from making another album. I sincerely doubt it.
