This was the first concert in the new Heineken Music Hall. Yes, Heineken Music Hall. And the name is the least bad thing about it. The monstrosity has the atmosphere of a hospital, a cloak-room with a capacity of 5 coats and 1 handbag and 2 coin machines for 5000 people to buy Heineken, which was not even cheap. Because of the enormous lines at the cloak-room we missed about half of Taproot's show. The other half made me think I didn't miss much. The singer had a good voice, but the music was very generic nu-metal. Linkin Park, which seemed almost as popular as headliner the Deftones, does not win an originality award either, but they're a lot more energetic and have good shout-along choruses. And even the fact that the sound was extremely muddy and too soft (pretty unusual for a metal concert), this being the Heineken Music Hell and all, didn't seem to bother the 17 years of age on average crowd. After a long change headliner Deftones proved that good sound is possible in the HMH. Unfortunately they did not play a lot of songs of their latest and most sophisticated album 'White Pony'. Not that the old songs are bad ('Bored' is the anthem of the nu-metal generation), but with the lack of melody typical of the genre after about an hour things start to sound the same. This in spite of Chino Moreno's great stage presence and vocal capabilities. After the concert was over it was time to get in line again to get our coats. Because people arrived at different times, but now all wanted to leave at the same time, the chaos was even worse. There was a smaller change of getting trampled in the pit than while waiting for your coat. We were lucky enough to get our own coats back, although with one scarf missing. So we left with mixed feelings about the music and the urge to get out our Che Guevara t-shirts and scream along with our Rage Against The Machine records.
