This sunday the Ekko venue was invaded; taken in on two sides. First the 275 people capacity crowd enjoying itself 100%, with smiling faces all over the place. On the other side by three men from South-Africa going by the name of Boo!. The army of Monki Punk (that's what they call their brand of music) from Johannesburg consists of these shiny happy creatures: a Viking with a trumpet and trombone aswell as keyboards and djembe called Ampie Omo, a drummer called Princess Leonie hitting things "like an epileptic telegraph operator on benzedrine" (as their MC claims at the end of the debut CD's hidden interview track) and the eye catching frontman, Mr. Androgynous, miss Chris Chameleon glittering away in his skin tight pink suit.
"When an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of instruments are given infinite time, eventually three will get together and play a perfect Boo! set." This is one way to describe the Monki Punk sets this trio offers. Putting Boo! into musical context is nearly impossible. Boo! is one of those post-modernist eclectic ensembles picking up pieces of debris from all sorts of musical (under)currents of the last four decades. In a Boo! set there are flashes of ska, reggae, punk, rock-n-roll, electro, funk, pop and more mixed into a frantic, highly enjoyable and danceable blend that never seizes to animate the listener.
Boo!'s strength lies exactly in this mix. Because of the enormous variety of styles Boo! manages to bring into this melting pot, there is never a dull moment, never boredom is given an opportunity to get a hold of the
audience. The music of Boo! is full of surprises, grabs the attention and doesn't let go, even after the show is over. Boo! is an act you won't forget.
With an all out attack on the Dutch audiences, armed with good will and tropical vibes, Boo! opened for Zita Swoon last year. On more than one occasion the headline act was completely blown away. The shows were a hedonist "Ode to Joy", to say the least. Having turned many people into true Boo!dists at these gigs, word of mouth spread quickly leading to this sold out crowd at Ekko.
A packed audience was ready to have their souls and hearts cleansed by the coming of the 3 Boo!dists. As if they were praying for redemption every moment of silence was filled with loud cheers of the "sacred name" Boo! The Ekko surrendered itself without any resistance. The rest of Holland will soon follow. How can anyone possibly resist this band? Boo! has it all; from the funky catchy tunes to the marvelous personnel in the band to the excitingly energetic performances.
Yes, Boo! did it, Boo! did it again and Boo! will do it many a time to come. Not many acts have the power to inject so much tropical flava into a room and set a place on fire in seconds the way Boo! can. Next time around; "Don't forget to Boo!".
