The Apers are a Dutch Ramones rip-off. But they're a good rip-off and singer Kevin Aper has charisma. He probably talks to the well-filled Melkweg more on this one evening than Joey Ramone has done in his entire career.
Next band on the bill are River City High. The band's punk-pop sounds as generic as its name, and they hardly get a reaction from the crowd. Which they notice themselves, make a joke about, and just keep on playing. This is obviously one of those American bands that has toured their home country extensively, and with a combination of that experience and a typical American if-you-keep-on-trying- you-will-make-it-in-the-end attitude, in the end they win over the crowd, even though nobody gets really enthusiastic.
This is different for Berliners Beatsteaks, who shifted from punk to a more rock sound succesfully on their latest album Hard Targets. Although the young, baggy-dressed crowd seems like your typical punk-pop crowd, they greet the new material with the enthusiasm that only a young, baggy-dressed punk crowd can react. In no time, there are plenty of crowd surfers and stage divers all over the Melkweg. But not only the punk songs are appreciated; the new material, which comes out smoothly, is equally well received. The even mix of new material and crowd pleasers, with a comic highlight — a crooned version of the Manowar tribute Kings Of Metal — make Beatsteaks a worthy headliner.
