Traditionally, Sundays at 10 Days have the concept of a one-room rave, and
yesterday this formula worked beautifully with master magician Jeff Mills and a
thrilling live gig by Aril Brikha.
For starters, Valium delivers some Detroit business, electro-influenced
minimalism, and dark-waving techno. Not an easy listening experience, but
minute-long screaming and handclapping marked his set as a damn tasty burger.
Nice to see Valium live up completely by the grateful reactions of the public.
The best things in life come with foreplay, Aril Brikha must have thought,
kicking off a live set that turned out to be an absolute runner-up for the most
inspired gig in Room 01. Creating a quiet, dubby, crystal-clear sound, clearly
influenced by labels like Grow (Hi-Lo) & M-plant. Amazing chord developments
that took their time, and sparse, yet functional and funky, rhythms interfered
in a beautiful journey inwards. The kind of techno we're fond of at KindaMuzik
HQs. The "Stockholm" t-shirt-wearing man saved the best for last, as an endless
version of Groove La Chord sprung brightly from the speakers, wrapping us up in
cotton wool. Such display of deepness we hadn't witnessed yet in Room 01.
Two a.m. and a little later: Ambientesque sounds preceded the chunky piano licks
of Wrath of the Punisher. When the beat dropped, Vooruit went mental, and little
Jeffrey donned a smile. As if he knew it was going to be a good one. Mills gots
his train right on track, and pumped the move with some more loopy techno
workers. The teeny-bopper crowd loved it, rewarding Mills for keeping it
straight, exciting, fastly mixed and diverse. An interlude from his Other Day EP
allowed us a little rest. After exactly 1.5 hours, we heared Underground
Resistance's Jupiter Jazz breaking the waves, and Mills kept on cutting the old
with the new. Playing, as always, half of his personal back catalogue, but who
cares, with such display of techno history and deck wizardry.
The third hour was more furious, with Mills trying to emphasize the more
soothing (well . . . ) sounds of the previous two hours. Tonight we witnessed a
mature Mills, representing his sound — old-skool, maybe, definitely not
retro, and certainly without any compromise — to the fullest.
Concluding Day 09's party, Psychogene once again confimed Brussels as the techno
capital of Belgium, providing the untouchables with a slightly more pumping
selection. Massive skills and exciting crossfader action proved his spot on 10
Days 2002 to be well-deserved.
Tomorrow: the last day, it is. It's unbelievable, it's inconceivable. I hope to
see u soon in . . .
