10 Days' third night was entirely dedicated to drum 'n' bass, with Belgian DJs
Leno, Murdock, Wontime & System D., Full Cycle heroes Krust & MC Dynamite, and
The Man Who Replaced Roni Size (who cancelled because of overall tiredness),
J-Majik. We came in when Murdock was preparing the crowd for the coming of the
Bristolian duo with a rough selection of speedy tunes. Murdock is one of the
better Belgian drum 'n' bass DJs. His talent at working a big crowd was apparent
in the constant flow of relentless stomping tracks with "silences" at just the
right moments. And a big crowd it was, too. In fact, there was an overabundance
of people, something the organisation might want to consider in the future.
Maybe let less people in or open another room to create some space to breathe
(and dance of course!). The atmosphere in Room 01 was suffocating, with hardly
any space to move. Have you ever tried standing still while the DJ
is playing
one top tune after the other? It's sheer torture, I'm telling you!
But let's not nag too much about such trivialities. By the time Murdock was
finished, the crowd was ready to receive a beating by the mighty Krust and his
Master of Ceremony Dynamite. Like a lion tamer, Krust whipped the boys and girls
with furious ruff-riding beats and ultra-heavy bass stabs, while Dynamite
shouted his instructions to the squads below him. And they followed: dancing,
jumping, screaming, stomping like there was no tomorrow and begging for rewind
after rewind. No surprises, apart from the fact that Krust is still boss after
all these years. Even though Room 01 is the venue's ground floor with two or
three floors above it, he still managed to blow the roof right off. Raaaaahh!
Lovely.
The frenzied crowd kept begging for rewinds when J Majik took over. Replacing
the master Roni Size mustn't have been the simplest of tasks, but the man pulled
it off anyway. His style is, compared to Krust's, much more metallic and ravey.
Techno influences, intergalactic war sounds and even vocal (sometimes almost
poppy) d'n'b were connected to each other with incredible mixing skills. But the
menacing and battleground-style platters, of course, continued to play the main
role. All in all a very entertaining set by one of the few hardcore junglists
who has already graced the UK Top 40.
And of course, plenty of rewinds, because
the man took some of the fiercest dubplates you've ever heard out of his box.
When we left, the aggressive crowd hopped and popped further to the —
again — enormous skills of Belgian duo Wontime & System D. Steam and
molten steel were the keywords for a boiling evening.
Day 3 and not a dull moment in ear-sight. Off to Day Four.
