Ten Days Off. It's on, and the Gigolos are opening the festivities in the main
hall. Life can be beautiful. It's e-lectro nite and Gigolo honcho DJ Hell brings
recording duo The Hacker and Miss Kitten along to showcase the sound of the
imprint that's largely responsible for the current electroclash craze on
national radios, in glossy magazines, and hip fashion stores. When we arrive at
Vooruit, there's a big queue ahead, and lots of anticipation in the air. It's
on.
It's already 00:30 hours when we make the descent from the entry hall to Room
01, which was last year called The Love Room. Three floors down, no exuberating
heat yet, no freaks on the stairs, but all that's about to change. Enter the
main hall and The Hacker is tearing up the place with vintage electro sounds.
The Fashion Party by The Neon Judgement is blasting through the speakers and the
room is transformed into electro heaven for two hours. Slick mixing, fat and
evol sounds, and enough electro classics to give the crowd a chance to proove it
knows music history. The extravagant program schedule puts Ten Days Off on the
map, but what might be its biggest asset is the crowd. Only 1,200 headz allowed
in Room 01, which makes the hall the perfect place for a cosy, but still
rave-like, atmosphere. The vibe at Ten Days Off is legendary, and it's reason
enough to get your ass to Ghent every July. The crowd is a nice of mixture of
music lovers and party freaks, youngsters and veterans. And everyone is into it.
Few bummers though. Witnessed a fight in the crowd (didn't anybody tell you this
is the Love Room?) and someone at 5voor12 HQ decided the crowd doesn't need
Smirnoff Ice this year. A minor setback. Luckily The Hacker is already providing
the absolute highlights of this year's edition. And the main course is yet to be
served. His illustrious musical partner Miss Kitten takes over at two. "Love
Miss Kitten" flashes on all the screens. Starting off with Kraftwerk's Numbers,
it looks like we're getting more vintage electro, but that's not the case. The
music gets harder, more and more four-to-the-floor beats, and eventually she's
even spinning what sounds like hard trance to me. But that doesn't spoil the
fun. The crowd loves it, and Miss Kitten lookes like she is having a ball. After
a varied but pretty stomping DJ set, she leaves the booth to make way for DJ
Hell.
And DJ Hell does his thing, mixing up obscure electro cuts with relentless
German electro-techno. Not the best set I've heard from the upper-Gigolo. He
delivers; nothing more nothing less. Outside the sun is already shining. The
heat is gruesome in the main hall, and there are so many drugged-out freaks on
the stairs it takes forever to get back to the main hall. Time to go home and
save energy for things to come. Love Miss Kitten!
