Day O5: By now, most people attending the festival have learned to accept that
pain is part of the path to revelation. Those who haven't stayed home, or were
found piled over one another in the stairhall around 5 a.m.
Room 01 was dedicated to progressive techno trance, but as a result of Sasha's
brusque annulation, Azzido da Bass was moved to Room 01 and FC Kahuna was given
the chance to play a little longer in Room 02.
Things kicked off nicely with Vanno, co-organizer of Submedia parties in Brussels. Since last year, so-called nu-skool breakz have taken Belgium by storm and gained recognition from a wider audience. Phat breaks, drops, and sub-basses in abundance. He ended with some goodies on Alltern8, and, as a cherry on the pie, the Prodigy's Breathe. Flawless mixing and a very personal selection made Vanno one of the few DJs that set fire to Room 02's floor at that early hour.
FC Kahuna, a Londonian duo, can be filed under "new techno." Not that we heard the duo cross over in any radically new directions, but with four decks, little breakbeat snippets, and the freshest tech-house around, they created a nice shelter for fans of the more minimal-orientated tech-sounds, equally aiming at legs and head.
Minimalism: something that, again, was totally absent in Room 01. German honcho Azzido da Bass opted for a full-throttle rinse-out, playing a rather Sven Väth-orientated set. Dance floor stormers proved Room 01 is not for the faint-hearted. No doubt, Sander Kleinenberg did what was expected, and with larger-than-life tunes, trancy breakdowns, and a nice pumping drive, he had it right where the crowd wanted it.
Ed & Kim played a homegame, easily getting the people along with what, we must admit, has become their own trademark of funky breakbeat and poppy electro, playing amongst others the Röyksopp remix of Mekon, and Felix da Housecat's Madame Hollywood and Zoot Woman.
Not the most revelatory night of the pack, but no matter: Tomorrow is Day Six, which means we are now officially half-over. Wait for the days to come . . .
