10 Days Off 2002 - Day 4: Room 01 - A Parisian with attitude
Room 01 was Ground Zero for the evening, with a leading role for the French Don of tech-house, monsieur Laurent Garnier.

Room 01 was Ground Zero for the evening, with a leading role for the French Don
of tech-house, Monsieur Laurent Garnier. A Parisian With Attitude, yes sir.
Applause from the crowd proved the classic techno beats of the Youngsters did
their job. Not the most adventurous sounds, but a valuable addition to F Comm's.
We had expected a retry from Galliano after the Youngsters, but instead, David
Duriez jacked the decks with more tight tech-house, harder-edged than most of
his Brique Rouge label output. Big up, though, for starting off with a 69 (Carl
Craig) rework of Jam The Box.
Meanwhile, Ground Zero already had that groovy thing going in the furious first
hour of Laurent Garnier's set. Second hour, two more to go, and Garnier shifted
to breakbeat-electro, new-wave influences, and general soundscapism. B-boy-ism
reminded us of parts of Miss Kittin's set on Friday. Felt good to hear a DJ
reinvent himself.
Ego boost, and all eyes pointed toward the man with the red face, whose overall
presence and nonchalance brought a welcome entertainment factor to Day 4. Posing
for the photographers, daring the crowd, being the center of the universe . . .
A one man show (or how else would you describe him?), chatting for a few minutes
while two records did their own thing in the meantime.
Moving back to some more common territories, the third hour saw more three-deck,
show-off stuff from our Frenchman. Both skills and personality were displayed in
extra-large portions.
All in all, a beautiful set from Garnier, with acidic eruptions, melodic breaks,
movie-like interruptions: techno as it was meant to be. No merciless beats, but
an exploration of joy at 140 bpm. Whereas Sunday and Monday saw some more
crunchy business on the floor, on Tuesday, Garnier had the ability to create an
open, atmospheric, positive attitude. Attitude, ou quoi?
