Who is the owner? A puppet or a real human being? Pick one, we know both could be right.
Tim: "Tim Potocic and Mark Milne, Real people with real skin."
Mark: "Mark Milne and Tim Potocic, but we actually do have real puppets versions of ourselves here at the office...I'm serious."
We started Kindamuzik because we hoped we'd get free drugs. Sadly we don't. Why did you start Sonic Unyon?
Tim: "To put out good music , honestly with good intentions. No intention of becoming rich but it would be a nice benefit, only if it occurs in our terms."
Mark: "Free drugs, but we actually got them, that's why we're still around almost 10 years later."
How did you finance your first record? Keep in mind that youngsters might be reading this.
Tim: "$6000 investment from our personal savings. Actually, at the time the only money we really had."
Mark: "Begged, borrowed, stole, used $ from live shows and our own $."
What advice would you give people starting a record label?
Tim: "Be prepared to work long and hard without a pay cheque for many years."
Mark: "Think real hard about it and then think some more about it."
Uh, hold on, now I had Englisch in skool. If I remember correctly it's spelled union, not unyon. What's the story behind Sonic Unyon? What were the alternative names?
Tim: "The name originated through Mark and Sandy (former partner, now back in school). They were big fans of Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) and they were reading an article that described his guitar playing as "pealing back the layers of a sonic onion" So the spelling of Onion was changed to Unyon and their you go "Sonic Unyon Recordings"."
Mark: "The name came from a magazine article. They were talking about Kevin Shields (My Blood Valentine) "peeling back the layers of his sonic onion". I'm not sure about the spelling I guess we figured it was half way between union and onion."
How many people work at the Sonic Unyon headquarters?
Mark: "9 and a half"
Tim: "9 full time, hopefully 10 soon. 3 part timers, and a bunch of volunteers and coop students."
A regular day for Kindamuzik is surfing the net looking for Neil Young bootlegs. How does a regular day in the office look like?
Tim: "No time to surf. Basically, 12 hour days are the norm (for the owners). Still can't get done what I need to in 12 hours. When are the days going be 48 hours long? Maybe if we move to the arctic we would feel like were getting more done?"
Mark: "A caffeine induced haze. Too much too do not enough time to do it followed by a few hours of sleep before starting all over again."
Kindamuzik's motto is "Sex and drugs. Keep your rock, we're deaf." What is Sonic Unyon's motto?
Tim: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH?"
Mark: "Money talks and bullshit walks"
What labels inspired you to start Sonic Unyon? And do you feel a kinship with other labels?
Tim: "Creation, Dischord, Epitaph, Fat, Revelation, Equal vision......"
Mark: "For me, Dischord, Merge and Touch and Go were inspirational. Kinship...not really I don't think we're all quite different."
You're based in Canada. Is there a music scene? I picture it to be a bunch of blokes covering "Summer of '69". Tell me I'm wrong. Please.
Tim: "Yes, You are very wrong, "summer of 69" sucks. There are many very vibrant scenes happening on several levels. You name it and there is a cool underground scene going on."
Mark: "There's tons of good music here all kinds heavy, punk, hardcore, space rock whatever you like it's just hidden under Celine Dion's pregnant belly."
Of course I am wrong, you have Tristan Psionic and Tricky Woo! How did you find your bands? On what basis do you sign bands?
Tim: "Well, Tristan was easy because the founding members of the label are in the band. Other than that we just rely on checking out bands live. If we like it then we try to work with them. Sometimes it works out and other times it doesn't. We don't get to put records out for everyone we wanted to but that's the way it goes. The main criteria for us in regard to singing bands is: We Must love the tunes, bands must tour, we must be like minded."
Mark: "We found a lot of our bands from playing with them (we're in TP) and some others mostly by word of mouth, rarely from demos."
What are some of the funniest/crappiest demos sent to you?
Tim: "There are so many I can't even tell you. We have a wall where we put all the demo photo's , it is quite amusing."
Mark: "We got the first Kittie demo and thought it was pretty funny. Really metal but in a Motley kind of way...now look at them. We get really ridiculous demos from country singers and a lot of guys with their shirts off."
Apart from us Kindamuzik people stalking you, how does the internet affect you?
Tim: "I think it helps us. We use it to promote our acts."
Mark: "The government uses it to spy on us, I'm sure of it."
What new releases should we be looking forward to?
Mark: "New records from Chore, The Dirtmitts and Sector Seven are all on deck."
2 Chore - A Coastaline Fire
Sector Seven - S/T spring
Dirtmitts - tba spring
Frank Black and the Catholics - fall
Sianspheric / Adam Franklin Split CD
Adam Franklin - TBA full length
Any famous last words?
Mark: "That makes it sound like I'm about to die? Am I?"
