Why did you choose to name the label Cooking Vinyl?
"My ex-partner and I were halfway through an excellent bottle of Islay malt whisky at 2 am when
it hit us."
What - in short - is the history of Cooking Vinyl? How did it come about?
"I was running a very small label called Forward Sounds International, and my ex-partner was
working at a distribution company. We decided to team up. There's a longer version on our website."
How would you describe the Cooking Vinyl sound? What are the qualities you look for when signing
artists to the label?
"It's culturally alternative, intelligent, and important. Do we love it? Can we make a
difference?"
If they weren't signed up already, is there any band you'd love to snatch up without hesitation?
"REM, Caetano Veloso, Afroman."
Cooking Vinyl is a relatively small and independent label. How important is the make-up and
position of the label to you? Is independence and size a major factor in the label's philosophy?
"Independence is a major factor. As to size: If the shoe fits, then wear it..."
What does a typical day at Cooking Vinyl Central look like?
"Busy!"
What's the scene in London like at the moment? To what extent is Cooking Vinyl a product of its
natural surroundings, and to what extent are you influenced by music coming out of London?
"We seem to be listening to America a lot right now... We're not influenced enough by London."
The internet is rapidly changing the way people consume and listen to music. How important is
this new technology to you, and do you have any plans to use this medium in different ways?
"The money bubble has burst, and the internet is coming out of the hype phase. It is a very
little baby right now. When it grows up, it will be great for information dissemination and sales
for couch potatoes. We took money from the bubble. Then we set up a website. When the baby grows up,
we will enter into a decent relationship."
When releasing a record, how important is packaging to you, combined with the music on the disc?
Is there a Cooking Vinyl look?
"Quality is the vague intangible we try to associate with our look. To be honest though, the
artists have a much bigger say in our look than we do!"
What does the future hold for Cooking Vinyl?
"Busy: much more great music!"
