The Basics: Justin Robertson

Maybe the '80s aren't so bad, after all. For a while there, it looked as if pop culture was set and ready to revive the decade of decadence. Save for the mulleted Hoxton/Shoreditch set and "ironic" acid-washed New Yorkers, the worst of the era has failed to take hold. Thankfully. Still, there are a handful of producers out there cherry-picking the best of '80s musical ingenuity, and UK acid house veteran Justin Robertson is at the head of the pack. Fusing seemingly outdated electro-pop and disco-punk with modern rhythms, Robertson departs briefly from the rough, funky, and booze-drenched house which propelled him into the fast-moving dance world. The man behind Lionrock is back with Revtone, his latest project for sublime house label Nuphonic. This full-length artist album moves easily amongst warm, sensual house, funk, and sleazy retro-futurism without missing a beat, and will surely tickle the fancy of house heads on the search for something fresh, fun, and a bit off-kilter. What kind of music did you listen to when you were growing up?
"I went through stages from west coast beatnik and longhaired rock kid to mod existentialist indie kid!!"
What kind of music do you listen to now, when you're not on the job?
"A lot of old soul, reggae,jazz,old sixties uk stuff like the Small Faces - I'm currently digging Ryan Adams and Jill Scott."

"Changes every day!! Today it's Nina Simone's "To Love Somebody" "
Guilty musical pleasure:
"I own some Grateful Dead LPs and I like them!!"
Best/Worst/Most Embarrassing club/DJ story:
"I played in an ex-Communist party bunker in St. Petersburg and got paid in vodka."
The moment you knew your music was much more than just a hobby:
"I've always wanted to be involved in music. When I left university I could of got a normal job but music was just too much fun!!"
Best part of the job:
"Getting paid for your hobby!"
Worst part of the job:
"I'm confused by daylight."
What keeps you going? What makes you continue with music?
"I'm restless, I love it, I always think I can do better and I can't think of anything else to do!!"
What were you doing 5 years ago?
"The same thing with more hair! On tour with Lionrock probably."
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
"The same thing with less hair!"
