Dave Alvin

Ex-Blaster DAVE ALVIN has more than come into his own as a solo artist. His latest album 'Public Domain' is yet another fantastic addition to the man's creative output. After a string of classic records, it'll be a treat to see what Dave has in store for the crowd at Blue Highways, as he's also bringing along his excellent band the Guilty Men.

How the devil are you?
"Just fine. How the devil are you?"

What was the first gig you ever went to?
"Dig this line-up: the Bobby Fuller Four, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Turtles, the East LA Midnighters, and Herman's Hermits. The show was at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and I was eight years old. Bobby Fuller was dressed in black leather, and the Lovin' Spoonful played a type of music what I later learned was called blues. Everyone was great except Herman and his gang."

What were you like at school?
"Quiet. Shy. Daydreamer. Screw-up."

If you weren't a music star what would you be?
"Underwater archaeologist."

What is your most treasured material possession?
"Depends on the mood I'm in. Perhaps my 1919 Hopi Hemis Kachina or my 1964 Fender Stratocater or my mint copy of Elmore James' album 'Blues After Hours', the only LP of Elmore's released in his lifetime."

What's the worst record you've ever made?
"I take the Fifth Amendment on that question. Do you have the Fifth Amendment in Holland?"

When did you last cry and why?
"When my father died last year. What's this got to do with music? Why don't you answer these questions?"

What's your poison?
"Beer, cigarettes, and red meat."

What's in your pockets right now?
"Guitar picks."

Who was the last person you punched?
"A guy who asked too many personal questions."

What was the last record you bought?
"Crying Sam Collins and His Git-Fiddle on Yazoo."

What are you most likely to complain about in a hotel?
"Small beds."

What characteristics do you think you've inherited from your parents?
"Tolerance and empathy."

What's your most unpleasant characteristic?
"Beer, cigarettes, and red meat."

What's your culinary specialty?
"Hot dogs and chocolate shakes."

What's your greatest fear?
"More questions."

What music would you have played at your funeral?
"Big Joe Turner."

What's the greatest film ever made?
"Treasure of the Sierra Madre."

"Yes."

"Where?"
