AZURE RAY (USA) Moby himself asked the duo calling themselves Azure Ray to contribute songs for his last album 18. Two female voices, warm harmonies, and a diction to die for. Imagine the Cocteau Twins being influenced by old-time Americana. Azure Ray's recent album Burn And Shiver is full of intimate and haunting songs of long nights, heartache, loneliness, and sudden loss. Not content to drown in despair, soothing arrangements weave delicately through the music, and Azure Ray find a soft glow inside the darkness that surrounds them.

BRIGHT EYES (USA) Conor Oberst is a mere 22 years old, but don't let that fact fool you: Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground, released this past August, is already his project Bright Eyes' fifth album. And that figure doesn't even include Oberst's other projects, such as the harder-edged Desaparecidos. It's that voice, yearning with heartfelt melancholy. Songs of despair and of relationships run aground have led to comparisons with a young Dylan, and it's in a live setting that Oberst and Bright Eyes really know how to win over their audience. Adventurous and complex? Sure. Rewarding and heartbreakingly beautiful? You bet. One of the most innovative bands at this moment.

THE FRAMES (IRL) With For The Birds, Ireland's Frames have finally arrived with their masterpiece held firmly in hand. Long well-respected and critically adored in their home country, this could and should be the big one. Steve Albini and Craig Ward (ex-dEUS) have produced a stunning album, full of real beauty and epic soundscapes. Think Will Oldham, Dirty Three, Grandaddy, and Nick Cave. Think magnificent. Think the Frames. The Frames will also play at the London Calling festival in Paradiso, taking place November 9. Highly recommended!

GIRLS AGAINST BOYS (USA) Well, Christ, what kinda magazine would we be without this band? After all, we're named after one of their songs! So it is indeed with the greatest of pleasure that we're proud to say that indie legends Girls Against Boys are playing tonight. Their songs, following the last, excellent album You Can't Fight What You Can't See, are compact, explosive, and extremely catchy. Singer Scott McCloud posseses a rawness, thoroughly infused with soul. Be sure to call out for "The Kinda Mzk You Like". See you down at the front...

THE GOOD LIFE (USA) The Good Life has its roots in Omaha's Saddle Creek stable of bands, with members also playing in Cursive and Desaparecidos and having toured and recorded with Bright Eyes and the Faint. With upbeat, keyboard-driven pop songs intermixed between sparse, vocal-driven stories of drunken disappointment, the Good Life's Black Out is a conceptually and musically rich album by five musicians. This second album proves that the band centred around mainman Tim Kasher is a force to be reckoned with. Full of talent and full of eclectic playfulness.

35007 (NL) Turning music on its head, this quintet from the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven sure do like their solid grooves. Long, instrumental pieces full of experimental dare. Synth melodies, fat guitar overdubs, and off-kilter drum patterns. On Stickman, so you know what to expect. Or do you?

ISOLATION YEARS (S) Sweden's Isolation Years debuted last year on German label Stickman. The band were personally recommended by none other than Norwegian neiughbours Motorpsycho, and it's not hard to hear why: The album Talkin' Backwards is filled with one gem after the other. Songs in the style of Palace, Timesbold, and Songs:Ohia. Sparse and beautiful.

MÚM (IS) Minimalist soundscapes and delicate poptronica: Iceland's Múm are at the vanguard of today's modern music. Signed to überhip label Fat Cat, their second album Finally We Are No-One reclaims Múm's place at the height of innovation and avantgarde chic.

SPOON (USA) Spoon is in tip-top shape on Kill The Moonlight, their latest, fourth album. Singer Britt Daniel sure as hell knows how to write catchy pop songs with an edge. Immediate choruses, sweeping verses: Spoon knows how to rock in the style of the Romantics, Kinks, Devo, and - hell, yes! - Bay City Rollers. Add a touch of Wire's claustrophobic pulse, and you're halfway there.

JACOB GOLDEN (GB) Ok, so there's this guy. He's got a great voice. Which means people compare him to Jeff Buckley all of the time. Or Nina Simone. Or Talk Talk. Well, Jacob is busy doing his own thing, and he's doing it bloody well at that. Strong songs with soaring melodies. A quality songwriter with exceptional talents.

MALCOLM MIDDLETON (GB) Arab Strap's Middleton has just released a simply stunning debut solo album, under the atypical title of 5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine. Twelve melancholy tales of fucked-up love and missed opportunities. Self-imploding and self-deprecating, this lone Scotsman presents us with miniature folk pearls. Less is more. And you can't get much less than Malcolm Middleton.

LOVE WOLLBERG (S) Love Wollberg is a young Swede, living in virtual anonymity in Stockholm. Love used to live in a state of non-profile in Paris, and his songs are extremely fragile and poetic. Sure, go and compare him to Elliott Smith. After all, they've got a similar voice and lyrical abruptness. Wollberg's Restless Farewell is a collection that should find its way straight to the heart of any singer/songwriter afficionado.
