Helium Vola is a new project by Ernst Horn. He is best known for his work with Deine Lakaien and Qntal. Like Qntal the music of Helium Vola is a combination of medieval songs with electronic elements. Most of the lyrics are traditional and are sung in German, Latin and French, while the music is written by Ernst Horn with a little help from other people. The comparison with Qntal is obvious. Maybe it is true that this album could have been the third Qntal album but on the other hand it isn't quiet that. Besides Ernst Horn there is nobody else from that group in Helium Vola. The other Qntal members, Michael Popp and Sigrid Hausen (both also from Estampie), with their classical training and distinctive music style are absent. This HeliumVola album is mainly a solo project by Ernst Horn. This doesn't mean that Helium Vola is a project of less musical qualities. The songs are well written, the mix of old and new sounds is excellent and the album as a whole, with all its different kind of musical textures, is among the best Ernst Horn has produced so far. There are a few danceable and uptempo songs on the album like "Omnis mundi creatura", the first single and a club hit in the gothic scene, and "Selig". Besides that there are the beautiful and more ethereal ballads "Begirlich in dem hertzen min", "Lösespruch" and "Les habitants du soleil". At times the music is haunting with songs like "Gegen einen Teufel" and "Fama tuba" or peaceful as with "Do bist min". The most surprising track is probably "Do tagte ez" which combines traditional music, electronic elements and Rammstein kind of heavy metal guitars. But as it is with all the songs on this album, the mix of old and new elements fit together just as if this is the most natural combination. Helium Vola is a beautiful album which explores in a skilful manner the heritage of medieval music and places this in a modern context. This record is not better nor worse than the Qntal albums, it complements them. Rumour is that Qntal is going to record a third album without Ernst Horn. And while this Helium Vola album is just released Ernst Horn himself is already busy writing a follow up. We will just have to wait and see (listen) what kind of wonderful music they will both produce next.
