Gorillaz are 2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle, and they are the world's most successful cartoon band since Alvin & the Chipmunks. With this type of gimmick you know that either some very slick business sharks are trying to rob ten-year-olds of their pocket money or the slightly twisted mastermind of Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura is involved somehow. Fortunately for us the latter is the case, Gorillaz being a collaboration between him and Blur's Damon Albarn, with cartoonist Jamie Hewlett creating the comic front-end. He's the guy behind the 'Tank Girl' cartoon, which was made into a movie starring Ice-T as a mutant kangaroo. (That film is SO underrated. How can anyone not love a film starring Ice-T as a mutant kangaroo?) Nakamura and Albarn are an excellent combination, since they both like to take pop music and then see how much they can freak it up, while still staying catchy. The words "zombie hiphop" as can be found on the back cover of the CD are a pretty accurate description of the result. Although undeniably catchy, there is always a dark edge and some sort of dragging quality, kind of like a zombie moves, to both the Automator's beats and Albarn's vocals. So it doesn't come as a surprise that 'M1 A1' contains samples from George Romero's 'Day of the Dead'. (That's the one with the music-loving zombie Bub. Another cult classic.) For the side project that Gorillaz is the songs are surprisingly good; a lot of the material is on a par with Blur's latest album '13'. The biggest surprise is 'Latin Simone (Que Pase Contigo)', where Ibrahim Ferrer's melancholic guest vocals combine beautifully with Nakamura's dark beats. Other highlights include single 'Clint Eastwood', with a rap by frequent Automator collaborator Del Tha Funky Homosapien, 'Starshine', and 'New Genious (Brother)'.
